Thelma Miller feels the pop, but tells herself not to worry. She’s 31 weeks pregnant, too early for her water to break. But this baby is coming nonetheless.
Pat Gallagher is her midwife. She has delivered all the Miller children — Joanna, Marie, Freda Joy, Philip and Joel. She delivered Thelma and her eight brothers and sisters.
It’s time, Pat tells Thelma. Time to go to the hospital.
