THE PROOF THAT A MAN IS JUSTIFIED BY

FAITH ALONE AND NOT BY WORKS

(Galatians 3:1-4:7)

Study 4:

THE PROOF OF THE LAW’S POWERLESSNESS

Text: Galatians 3:19-22

Aim:

To expose the law’s powerlessness to justify us.

Memory Verse:

“But the Scripture hath concluded all under sin,

that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given

to them that believe” (Ga.3:22).

INTRODUCTION:

One of the corny gags from the days of Vaudeville theater was

someone pointing a gun at someone else, pulling the trigger

and...BANG! said the flag as it hung from the barrel. The gun

looked real and sounded real, but it proved to be harmless.

D. The Proof of the Law’s

Powerlessness, 3:19-22

19

Wherefore

then

serveth the law? It was

added

because

of

transgressions, till the

seed should come to

whom the promise was

made; and it was ordained

by angels in the hand of a

mediator.

20 Now a mediator is not

a mediator of one, but

God is one.

21 Is the law then against

the promises of God? God

forbid: for if there had

been a law given which

could have given life,

verily

righteousness

should have been by the

law.

22 But the Scripture hath

concluded all under sin,

that the promise by faith

of Jesus Christ might be

given to them that

believe.

1. The law was given to

reveal sin—to make

men more aware of

their sins

2. The law was tempo-

rary

3. The law was not given

by God, but through

a mediator; therefore,

it is inferior

4. The law has no power

to give life

5. The law declares that

the whole world is a

prisoner of sin
