MnDOT installs first-of-its-kind warning signals for Amish buggies in Fillmore County

CANTON, MN – It was a milestone for the Minnesota Department of Transportation as it announced a new traffic system in Fillmore County, that is the first of its kind in the United States. It is a new motion signal, located between Mabel and Canton on Highway 44, that warns drivers that an Amish buggy is on the road.

“The sensor actually is not aimed at the road,” Traffic Operations Engineer David Tsang said. “It’s aimed at the shoulder, because we know, at that location on Highway 44, buggies tend to travel on the shoulder, and we pointed the sensor at the shoulder so that way it doesn’t pick up the cars on the roadway.”
