Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania – The winter solstice is past and each cold but lengthening day brings closer the time when white flowers will blossom on five young trees standing in a shallow and tragic valley.
Five young Amish girls – named Anna, Lena, Marian, Mary and Naomi – were murdered there in 2006.
Some locals are unaware of the trees’ significance. Others welcome the sight of them maturing, season by season.
