Meet the Staff and Volunteers

Many have asked why a ministry like Mission to Amish People even exists. In the eyes of many, the Amish seem peaceful and separated from a world of murder and divorce, and to a large extent this is true. Crime within Amish communities is often minimal, and their lifestyle appears calm, hardworking, and rooted in family and tradition.

Behind the scenes, God is using a dedicated team of staff and volunteers to share the gospel, disciple believers, and walk with Amish and former Amish individuals through seasons of deep change.

Staff

MAP’s staff members serve in a variety of roles—leadership, administration, writing, publications, data entry, media, and education—all with the same heart: to see Amish and former Amish people come to know Christ and grow in Him.

Joe Keim Esther Keim

Joe & Esther Keim

Executive Director · Staff

Joe Keim was born and raised in an Old Order Amish community in Ashland, Ohio. At the age of 16, one of Joe’s close Amish friends secretly shared that he had accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. After a season of confusion, Joe followed tradition and joined the Amish church. However, he soon became unhappy and decided to leave the Amish.

While living outside the Amish culture, Joe’s friend shared the gospel with him again, and this time it made sense. With tears running down his face, Joe invited Jesus to become his Savior. He shared his faith with Esther Yoder, and she accepted the Lord into her life as well. Soon after that, they decided to return to their Amish community.

Upon returning to their Amish roots, Joe and Esther married. As time passed, they read their Bibles and concluded that they would need to leave their friends, family, and the Amish community in order to serve the Lord in freedom and grace. In 1987, they moved into town, began attending Bethel Baptist Church, and used their God-given abilities to serve wherever they could.

In 1999, God called Joe into full-time ministry to the Amish people. Today, he serves as founder and executive director of Mission to Amish People, a ministry that has reached out to tens of thousands of Amish people with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Jennifer, Office Manager at MAP

Jennifer

Office Manager · Staff

Hi, my name is Jennifer, and I am the office manager at Mission to Amish People (MAP). My husband and I have been married for over 30 years and have four daughters ranging in age from 17 to 27. I previously worked in banking for 20 years and “retired” at age 39 to focus on our family.

I grew up attending Sunday School and church, and gave my life to Christ at nine years old. In recent years, my husband and I have taught Sunday School to children, teenagers, and young adults, and we are active in various church roles.

When I returned to the workforce, I wanted a Christ-centered position. My journey with MAP started as a cashier at Beyond Measure Market, then assisting with the deli and café staff. I was later asked to temporarily step into the office manager role at MAP. As I saw the Lord’s hand in this ministry, I truly felt at home.

I work alongside staff and precious volunteers who freely give their time and talents to the SonLight Club. New lessons reach children every other week, and it is an honor to be part of making sure these students receive Bible lessons and encouragement. If you would like Amish or Mennonite children to be part of the SonLight Club, please email their name, address, and age to: Jennifer@mapministry.org.

Jennifer Gleckler

Jennifer Gleckler

Administrative Assistant · Staff

Hi, I’m Jennifer, a sinner saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Several years ago, I said that one day I wanted to be a missionary to the Amish—now here I am at MAP Ministry! I’m truly grateful to be around such a wonderful group of people. Everyone is so sweet, and I am excited to see what the Lord has for me here.

Being a follower of Christ can be challenging, yet incredibly rewarding. Sometimes it feels easier to trust Jesus with eternity than with the daily needs and struggles of life. Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and we often end up in places we never anticipated, but Jesus remains faithful, and I’m thankful to be forgiven even though I fail every day.

I love spending time with family and friends and enjoy anything that involves serving the Lord. We all need help and encouragement, and I strive to be a blessing in any way I can. I also enjoy learning about nutrition and healthy cooking, preparing meals for others, and discovering new coffee shops for a good cup of coffee.

Michal Nutt

Michal Nutt

Publications · Staff

Michal grew up in rural Ohio listening to her parents share conversations they had about Christ with their Amish neighbors. After homeschooling her three daughters, Mission to Amish People became a natural fit for ministry in her “retirement” years.

She oversees MAP’s publications, including The Amish Voice, the Ministry Update, tracts, booklets, and flyers, and is also involved in event planning and coordinating.

Michal is grateful for God’s gift of family—her biological family, church family, work family, and her family of friends.

Laina Garrison

Laina Garrison

SonLight Club Data Entry · Staff

Laina grew up in a Christian home and attended Awana as a child. At five, she prayed with her mom to accept Jesus after hearing about hell. At seven, she was baptized, but fear of not being saved led her to repeatedly re-invite Jesus into her heart and even baptize herself for reassurance.

As she grew older, she became legalistic and punished herself for sin. She served in church activities and missions but lived in constant fear of not being good enough for God. In college, she judged others for not being strict and eventually felt that God hated her. While serving as a missionary in East Asia, she faced deep spiritual oppression and returned home early after a breakdown.

In the years since, God has healed her heart. She stopped trying to earn His favor and finally understood that Christ bore her punishment and cleansed her completely. A documentary about a family leaving the Amish and coming to Christ rekindled her interest in the Amish, and she later discovered MAP Ministry and sensed God leading her to apply.

Today, Laina is grateful to serve with MAP Ministry and share the gospel with the Amish and others.

Rachel Arnold

Rachel Arnold

GED Manager · Staff

Rachel Arnold began volunteering at MAP in 2012. Shortly afterward, she started studying Christian Counseling and Psychology in college. In 2014, she completed an internship helping those who had left the Amish, which led to the birth of the GED program.

Since 2014, Rachel has been helping those who leave their Amish communities, as well as others in the area, pursue their GED and move forward with education and opportunities.

Volunteers

Volunteers are a vital part of MAP Ministry, faithfully grading lessons, assembling mailings, and encouraging former Amish families. Many have rearranged their retirement years and even moved across the country to serve.

Jerry and Carol Gess

Jerry & Carol Gess

Lesson Graders · Volunteers

Jerry retired from General Motors and now serves as chaplain of a large nursing home in Ashland. In 1987, Jerry and Carol opened their home to Joe and Esther, giving them a place to stay until they could get on their feet.

Jerry and Carol have three daughters, three sons, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two of their sons have gone home to be with the Lord. They have always been very involved in the MAP ministry and are enthusiastic about being used by the Lord to reach the Amish for Christ.

Jerry and Carol volunteer 1–2 days a week.

Linda Echelberger

Linda Echelberger

Floater · Volunteer

Linda has four children and four grandchildren. She had always been curious about the Amish culture. After hearing about MAP Ministry through her church, she felt led to volunteer and do what she could.

She says it is a blessing to see lives changed through the Bible Club. Linda works one to two days a week grading lessons or assembling them for mailing.

Linda volunteers 1–2 days a week.

Rhoda Brubaker

Rhoda Brubaker

Lesson Grader · Volunteer

Rhoda grew up “black car” Mennonite in northwestern Wayne County, Ohio. Both of her grandfathers were ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She has always walked with God, but had to learn the true meaning of His grace, and left her Mennonite roots in 1970.

When she was 17, her life was impacted by an Amish girl around 15 years old. God placed a burden in her heart for the Amish that never left. After retiring as an LPN, Rhoda found MAP and recognized the call God had placed on her heart decades earlier.

When not serving at MAP, Rhoda drives for horse-and-buggy Mennonites in the area, some of whom are distant relatives. Rhoda volunteers 1–2 days a week.

Diane Paulson

Diane Paulson

Lesson Grader · Volunteer

While growing up in Santa Clara, California, Diane attended church but never heard how to have a personal relationship with God. In 1969, at San Jose State University, two people from Campus Crusade for Christ shared with her about being born again and became her friends. In 1970, she came to know Christ as her Savior.

Years later, Diane became curious about the Amish. While reading a book about them, she noticed MAP mentioned in the back. That began a prayer journey that eventually led her and her husband, John, to move from California to Ohio upon retirement so she could volunteer with MAP.

Diane considers it a privilege to correct papers for the SonLight Club, befriend former Amish, and live in beautiful Ohio. Diane volunteers 1–2 days a week.

Larry Lepard

Larry Lepard

Lesson Grader · Volunteer

Larry is a retired English and reading teacher. As he was about to retire for the third time, he came across Joe Keim’s book on Kindle. Reading it, he realized that grading Bible studies would be an ideal volunteer role in which he could serve the Lord during retirement.

Larry loves researching history, genealogy, and the Hebrew roots of the Christian faith, and he administers several Facebook groups. He and his wife, Joanne, have a daughter and a son, five grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and another on the way.

Larry volunteers 1–2 days a week.

I grew up in a Christian home and accepted Christ at five after learning about hell in Awana. At seven, I was baptized but struggled with fear about my salvation, often re-inviting Jesus into my heart. As I grew older, I became legalistic, punishing myself for sin and trying to earn God’s favor.

In my teens, I served in church and on mission trips but lived in fear of not being good enough. I attended a missionary training college, hoping to find true Christians, but became even more legalistic and angry with God. During a year as a student missionary in East Asia, I experienced spiritual oppression and returned home early after a breakdown.

Over time, God showed me that Christ had already paid for my sins. A documentary about an ex-Amish family touched my heart and eventually led me to the MAP Ministry, where I now joyfully share the gospel with the Amish and others.
