Katherine grew up in the Amish community and describes her childhood as very difficult. She often felt like she could not truly be herself and frequently felt judged by those around her. Today, one of the things she is most thankful for is the freedom to openly talk about God with others. Since leaving the Amish, she says she has become much more comfortable with who God created her to be.
At the age of 13, Katherine joined the SonLight Club. Although she enjoyed the lessons, she struggled to complete them because she did not have an English Bible, she could fully understand. About a year later, she received a copy of the New Testament as a reward for completing a series of lessons. That gift became a turning point in her life. It was the very first Bible she owned in a language she could clearly read and understand for herself.
One verse that became especially meaningful to Katherine is Romans 3:23:
She says this verse helped her understand that she falls short and truly needs a Savior.
After spending the last six months at New Beginnings Homestead, Katherine says she has grown tremendously in her walk with the Lord. She now understands more than ever that her relationship with God is not based on works. During her time here, she has also learned many practical life skills, including how to send emails, use computers, and communicate more confidently with others.
Looking ahead, Katherine hopes to travel and share the Gospel with others once she finishes her time at New Beginnings.
She offers this advice to anyone considering leaving the Amish:
“Leaving is a beautiful thing, but it will be tough too. It isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. You have to be all in or all out.”
Lastly, Katherine spoke very highly of the mentor she was given through the ministry. She deeply appreciated the encouragement and support she received and hopes every future girl who comes to the ministry will be blessed with a mentor like hers.
