Don't Strike
March 1, 2017
Gentleness often wins when harshness fails. There is a story told of a philosopher who was walking along a road one day when he saw a young man vainly trying to get a calf through a gate. The man pulled the calf, and failed. Then he tried to push it, and also failed. He was angry by this time and was ready to thrash the calf when a gentle voice behind him said, "Oh, don't strike it." The speaker came forward, put his finger into the calf's mouth and led it through the gate while it contentedly sucked his finger. Whether we are dealing with animals or people, gentle ways are often the best.
