Columbia man opens up about his Amish past

Moses Gingerich doesn’t mind fielding the tough questions.
Do you go to church now? (“No.”)
Do you still believe in God? (“Yes.”)
Do you think you’re going to hell? (“Probably.”)
He gave the last answer on national television. He was feeling a little vulnerable when he said that, Gingerich admitted over a cup of coffee on a snowy January morning in Columbia...

I left the Amish 14 years ago. I have been to Church maybe 10 times since I left. I still believe in God. I still have God in my heart and in my Life. God is my judge not the Amish. There is a part of the Bible that some of the Amish seem to forget. You shall not Judge. God is the only one that will Judge. Some Amish think because they go to Church they will go to Heaven. The Bible says you can be a wolf in sheeps clothing. There is good and there is bad people that go to church. There is some people that don't go to Church and are better people then some that do. You can have God in your Life know matter where you are. Know matter if you go to Church or not.

Nancy, thank you for sharing your heart. I agree with you that Christians are not going to get saved more by attending church. However, I do believe that those who are truly born again will have a desire in their heart to follow the Lord's command and get involved in a church where they can use their gifts. The New testament was written about the church. Jesus died for the church. Some day He will rapture the church. He also quipped the church by calling men and women with spiritual gifts. Christ leaves a command for His people:Hebrews 10:24-25And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

As being raised to follow a fairly basic ordung, I am rather disgusted by Moses. In my own heart I believe he is exploiting these people to not only gain fame but also fortune. Who are we to say what is right or wrong in these communities. Each community has its own set of rules. This show is not showing both sides of the story. While I am not suggesting that people should not be allowed to leave, I am also suggesting that Moses should not be allowed to exploit them.

I'm currently watching Amish:Out of Order as I type this. I did not grow up Amish, but grew up Christian and am now atheist after studying the Bible in depth and how the Bible was put together over the years. But even though my story is different the similarities of family members pushing one away is striking. And this kind of stuff happens in many religions, if Muslim it could even mean death. I wanted to say that, religions have these things build in to force people into believing. The thought of loosing family for simply not following what they believe is very powerful, and is one of the reasons why religion still exists in the world. It's sad that Moses thinks he is going to hell, but I can assure him he is not. If a god exists, he wouldn't make himself undetectable by science yet visible to ancient men with little to no understanding of the world.

This is so sad. The Amish way of life is only that- a way of life, not a religion. Too many very conservative Amish churches teach their members that being Amish is what saves you. Only Jesus Christ can save you!! I am saddened to see this being played out so many times. yet it is not always this way in Amish churches. There are Amish churches that preach salvation through Jesus Christ, and live it out in the form of being Amish. Truly, being Amish is only a way of applying the Biblical principles we see in the Bible. It is not something that can save you! Believe me, I know. I am a member of an Amish church that teaches Jesus Christ as our salvation.
