State: 97 cases of whooping cough reported among Delaware Amish

KENT COUNTY, DE - The Division of Public Health is investigating an outbreak of whooping cough after discovering almost 100 people in Kent County's Amish community have the contagious disease.
Health officials said they began investigating in June and have identified 97 cases of whooping cough, officially known as pertussis, as of Aug. 18.
The highly contagious disease is transmitted by coughing or sneezing. It can cause severe breathing illness among babies and young children.
