Fatal accident prompts St. Lawrence County legislators to reconsider rules for Amish buggies and wagons

HEUVELTON, NY - After hearing about a fatal accident involving an Amish wagon, St. Lawrence County legislators are once again trying to figure out if they should force Amish to improve the visibility of their horse-drawn wagons and buggies.

Phyllis Shaw of Heuvelton became emotional at last week’s board meeting when she relayed a story about a relative who was left traumatized after hitting an Amish wagon last year with her motor vehicle on Irish Settlement Road, town of Oswegatchie. A 26-year-old Amish man was killed in the Nov. 29 collision.
