Amish groups cancel meeting with St. Lawrence County legislators over traffic-safety proposal

CANTON, NY — St. Lawrence County legislators were supposed to meet with Amish elders Tuesday to talk about a proposal to improve the visibility of their buggies and wagons, but the meeting was called off because the Amish bishops couldn’t reach a consensus among their communities.

Legislature Chairman Joseph R. Lightfoot, R-Ogdensburg, told fellow legislators that Amish leaders had been approached about the idea of attaching a strip of white reflective tape to the wheel spokes on their buggies. Markings would also be placed on the device that connects the vehicle to the horse.
