How other states keep highways safe when car, Amish buggy drivers share the road

LANSING, MI — An oddity in a rural county's car crash statistics prompted Michigan traffic experts to take a closer look at the dangers of cars and horse-drawn buggies sharing the road.
The number of pedestrian crashes reported in Gladwin County is uncharacteristically high, said David Morena, safety and traffic operations engineer for the Michigan division of the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration.
