You are in your buggy and driving home, thinking about all the things that are going on in your world, when suddenly a sound unlike any you've ever heard, fills the air. The sound is high above you. First it sounds like a trumpet; then a choir; then a choir of trumpets...you don't know for sure what it is, but you want to know. So you pull over to the side of the road, get out of your buggy, and look up. As you do, you see you aren't the only curious one.

What a blessed time of year we have just come through! There is Thanksgiving with all the family, friends, fun, and of course the food! Then there is Christmas! To a lot of people, Christmas may be just more of the same with the exception of the gifts, but to me Christmas becomes more special and more real every year-especially since I have had a child; we have a second child on the way. I realize that Christmas is not just a story we read about in the Bible, or like to read to our children. This is something that really happened.

Whether it is changing a habit or setting some other goal, there are steps to follow which can help us achieve success. It is a common practice to set New Year's resolutions (change habits or set goals) which we hope will be accomplished by the end of the year. Too often we fail to take even the first step towards reaching our goals. Hopefully the following five principles will help you towards success.

When I was young and growing up, we had one of those large old barns, with four haymows. When we put loose hay in the back mows, we children often had the job of pulling back the carriage to the center for the next load. My older cousins who happened to be helping with hay showed us that you could ride the rope down from the crosstie. That looked risky, so we would climb halfway up and try that first. When we came to the point where we believed that was safe, we would climb higher and grab the rope for a ride down. I began to have faith in that rope. And to gain faith, I had to become familiar with the object-in this case the rope.

Hunting is a popular sport in Ohio. I have enjoyed many days in the woods while hunting squirrel, rabbits and deer. I've learned that although you have the right equipment, the proper skill, great weather and territory, you do not always find the game you're hunting for.

Anyone can become angry. That is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose and in the right way - that is not easy. Anger can eat a person up. People who explode and express anger easily can cause great harm to those they are called to encourage. It's important for us to understand anger and it's ability to destroy.

We have all been impacted with the cold hard reality of what can happen, when a person is not thinking clearly. Yes, I am referring to the tragedy that took place on Monday, October 2nd 2006 in Bart Township, Lancaster County, Pa. Personally my heart and prayers go out to and for the surviving victims, families and extended families, of those children and for the Roberts and Welk families.

When I was a youngster, one of the Christmas gifts I remember most is when Dad gave me a BB gun for Christmas. You may say that was a risky thing to give a fourteen-year-old. Yes, there are gifts that carry risk because of the potential to do harm. What do you suppose would have happened if I had chosen to shoot BB's at a barn window or any of the farm animals? I am certain Dad would have quickly separated the gun from me. However, fear is not what kept me from misusing the BB gun. It was love and respect for the family.

We learned from our previous study that Jesus called a meeting with his 12 apostles and in that meeting He introduced a brand new concept, called the church. All throughout the Old Testament, the church had not been mentioned once. But as we know from before, the New Testament mentions the church 128 times.

We had discussed the issue of laying our prayer books aside and coming together as small groups for some real, from the heart, crying out to God, prayer time. Wow! Some of you who responded were all for getting together to pray and excited to hear that others felt the same way; others felt quite the opposite and used Matthew 6:6 to back up why they were against group prayer.

Prayer is our direct line with heaven. Prayer allows us to talk to God! He wants us to communicate with Him, like a person-to-person phone call.

Through numerous conversations I have had recently my heart has been stirred to see what God has to say about faith. It turns out that without faith it is impossible to please God. The best definition I found that the scriptures give for faith is found in Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. The entire chapter in Hebrews 11 is a good place to start reading about faith. I read Abraham's story about how God spoke to him about having a baby when he was already old and Sarah's womb was dead (beyond child bearing years).

After the end of the civil war, all the slaves in the United States were set free by the thirteenth amendment. The ability to read was not as widespread as it is now and slaves in particular weren't able to pick up a newspaper and see that indeed they were no longer slaves. The news was spread mostly by word of mouth and the slave owners were not likely to try to convince their slaves that they were free. It was in their interest to try to convince them that they were still bound to their old owners so as to get as much free labor as possible. If a slave believed in his heart that he was still a slave, he would remain in bondage.

According to the World Christian Encyclopedia, there may be as many as 34,000 different types of religions in the world today. Among the Amish alone, we have a wide range of church types.
