When Hurt By Someone Close to You
| January 1, 2008Recently, I was deeply hurt by someone close to me: My immediate reaction was anger. Then grief. Then disappointment. And then wounded pride. I had expected so much more in the relationship! And because I hate pain, I wanted to:

Think On These Things
| November 1, 2007We have all been impacted with the cold hard reality of what can happen, when a person is not thinking clearly. Yes, I am referring to the tragedy that took place on Monday, October 2nd 2006 in Bart Township, Lancaster County, Pa. Personally my heart and prayers go out to and for the surviving victims, families and extended families, of those children and for the Roberts and Welk families.

What is Faith? (Part 2)
| November 1, 2007In the last edition of the Amish Voice I referred to Romans Chapter 10. My prayer is that you took time to read the whole thing; because of space I can only refer to some of the main verses that direct us to putting our faith in Christ.

Gifts and Rewards
| November 1, 2007When I was a youngster, one of the Christmas gifts I remember most is when Dad gave me a BB gun for Christmas. You may say that was a risky thing to give a fourteen-year-old. Yes, there are gifts that carry risk because of the potential to do harm. What do you suppose would have happened if I had chosen to shoot BB's at a barn window or any of the farm animals? I am certain Dad would have quickly separated the gun from me. However, fear is not what kept me from misusing the BB gun. It was love and respect for the family.

Hungering and Thirsting After God
| November 1, 2007 Do you ever find yourself not being able to sleep at night because you want more of God in your life? Do you find yourself hungering and thirsting for a much deeper, stronger, and a more real relationship with the Lord? Has it ever become so important to you that you laid down on the floor and wept until the floor around you was wet?
The Church That Exploded
| November 1, 2007We learned from our previous study that Jesus called a meeting with his 12 apostles and in that meeting He introduced a brand new concept, called the church. All throughout the Old Testament, the church had not been mentioned once. But as we know from before, the New Testament mentions the church 128 times.

The Importance of Public Prayer
| November 1, 2007We had discussed the issue of laying our prayer books aside and coming together as small groups for some real, from the heart, crying out to God, prayer time. Wow! Some of you who responded were all for getting together to pray and excited to hear that others felt the same way; others felt quite the opposite and used Matthew 6:6 to back up why they were against group prayer.

What is Prayer?
| November 1, 2007Prayer is our direct line with heaven. Prayer allows us to talk to God! He wants us to communicate with Him, like a person-to-person phone call.

What is Faith? (Part 1)
| September 1, 2007Through numerous conversations I have had recently my heart has been stirred to see what God has to say about faith. It turns out that without faith it is impossible to please God. The best definition I found that the scriptures give for faith is found in Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. The entire chapter in Hebrews 11 is a good place to start reading about faith. I read Abraham's story about how God spoke to him about having a baby when he was already old and Sarah's womb was dead (beyond child bearing years).

Slave or Free?
| September 1, 2007After the end of the civil war, all the slaves in the United States were set free by the thirteenth amendment. The ability to read was not as widespread as it is now and slaves in particular weren't able to pick up a newspaper and see that indeed they were no longer slaves. The news was spread mostly by word of mouth and the slave owners were not likely to try to convince their slaves that they were free. It was in their interest to try to convince them that they were still bound to their old owners so as to get as much free labor as possible. If a slave believed in his heart that he was still a slave, he would remain in bondage.

Weekly Prayer Meetings
| September 1, 2007In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God spoke to Solomon and said, If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Which Church Is The Right Church?
| September 1, 2007Do you ever wonder which church is the right church? I mean, when you get right down to it, we have all kinds, and all types of different churches in the world that we live in. According to the World Christian Encyclopedia, there may be as many as 34,000 different types of religions in the world today. Among the Amish alone, we have a wide range of church types.

What Are You Focusing On?
| September 1, 2007Have you ever felt that no matter how hard you try, or no matter what you do, things just never seem to come out right? Have you ever felt worthless, unwanted or unneeded, have you felt like you are always judged because of your past failures? I must admit that I also have felt that way, but was encouraged when I read these words written by pastor & author Rick Warren

Springtime Brings New Life
| July 1, 2007I am so excited to be writing and sharing my heart with all of you! My hope and prayer is that you will find hope, encouragement, and excitement for life as I share with you. Springtime is my favorite time of the year, maybe because I was born in the spring. Everything is turning green, new life is springing up everywhere, gardens are being planted. Believe me when I tell you that seeing things green is very exciting. Where I live in Texas having things green is a short-lived experience,

God Seeks A Relationship With You

Noble People
| July 1, 2007 Acts 17:11 says, These (Bereans) were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Whittaker Says He Wishes He Hadn't Won the Jackpot
| July 1, 2007Jack Whittaker says his life became a nightmare after he won a nearly $315 million jackpot, a prize that cost him his family and made him a target for lawsuits, thieves and people looking for easy money. "It certainly has been a curse to me," "I don't know where it will end but I don't like Jack Whittaker. I don't like the hard heart I've got. I just don't like what I've become," he said.

Why Go To Church?
| July 1, 2007A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the preachers are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."

Leave the Amish Alone!
| October 2, 2006I was raised and grew up in NY, now living in IL. I haven't done enough research to know exactly what or why you are so against the Amish way. All I know is I was good friends with an Amish family and knew other families as well. I never had a problem with any of them and trusted them more than I trust most.
